Literary Love Savannah 2023 Attending Author Interview, Lucille Yates

Author Name (s) Lucille Yates

Genre(s) Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy

What made/inspired you decide to be a writer? The constant stories I made up to entertain myself. I figured I could entertain others as well. And it’s a lot of fun and now I won’t forget the stories.

What inspires your writing? Knowing someone out there wants to read what I’m writing. That and if I’m writing, I don’t have time to clean.

What's the first thing you remember writing, and how old were you? I wrote lots of poems from twelve to early twenties. The first story I remember writing was what I’m basing my next novel on. I wrote it when I was around twenty seven I think. After writing several scenes I realized it would make more sense with a book in front of it. I was writing the fourth book first.

Do you need quiet or can you write anywhere? I can write anywhere. It’s easier when it’s quiet or if someone is not actively trying to talk to me.

How do you handle brain block? I sleep. Then I talk to my spouse about it. Following that I binge read about five novels then try writing again.

How do you keep the characters straight- not mixing them up? I have a series bible spreadsheet which helps keep names straight for series. It has a description section, which book they appear in, and age section. I’ll use it just for standalones, too.

If they could bring any character from any story any time period to life who would it be?I don't know. I’ve sat here for twenty minutes debating this and I can’t come to a consensus. Eleret Salven from The Raven Ring maybe? Or Hero Protagonist from Snow Crash? Maybe YT from Snow Crash…

What is your favorite dinosaur and why? Ankylosaurus. It has a hard shelled back, the end of it’s tail is huge and it can bash you with it, but it’s an herbivore. I like the way it looks. Plus there is this song about an ankylosaurus named Jenny that I like.

For those readers who are new to you, what book should they start off with and why? The Witch’s Complement. It’s the first in the series and gives you an idea of how I write and the types of supernatural elements I include in my works. Plus the side characters are hilarious.
