Interview with Author Shelley Russell Nolan

A bit about the story in Mythical Creatures:

To raise the status of her forest clan, Evangeline is determined to win a scholarship to become an apprentice mage. She is one of twelve elves vying for the coveted spot.

The only thing more fierce than the competition is the mage devising the challenges the candidates will face.

When Evangeline stumbles across Mage Stormlake’s biggest secret, a dragon egg, she is sure she will be cast out of the castle, her quest to help her family a failure. But a bond forms between her and the unborn dragon, a creature elven mages banished from Elleridel decades ago.

When the dragon hatches, and with her dream of becoming a mage on the line, Evangeline must decide what is worth fighting for.

  • Tell us a bit about you:

Shelley Russell Nolan is an Australian author who writes fantasy stories about women with extraordinary abilities, handsome allies and ruthless adversaries. She grew up watching Doctor Who and devouring the science fiction and fantasy section of her local library. At sixteen she wrote a story about a teenage girl who was transported to another world to fight brain eating aliens. Since then she has written urban fantasy and post apocalyptic fantasy where things go bump in the night and freaks can fall in love.

  • Why mythical creatures?

As a teenager I read any book I could get my hands on with dragons, elves and magic. I would daydream about discovering magic abilities and bonding with a dragon. Writing about mythical creatures allows me to fulfill those dreams.

  • What inspired this story?

I saw the image of an elf girl with a dragon draped over her shoulders and couldn’t get it out of my head. The names of the characters came to me, and I used the image to create the cover for Dragon Bond.

  • What can we expect from this collection?

The Mythical Creatures YA collection contains a treasure trove of fantasy stories, just like the ones I devoured when I was a teenager and that inspired me to write. Filled with magic and amazing creatures, they are guaranteed to thrill and delight any reader.
